About the mammal
Chitwan National Park is a true paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, and one of the most captivating creatures you can witness here is the one-horned rhinoceros, also known as the Indian rhinoceros.
These magnificent creatures can weigh up to 2,000 kg and are easily distinguished by their single horn and gray-brown skin, which is covered in folds. They are herbivores and feed mainly on grasses, leaves, and aquatic plants.
Chitwan National Park is home to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros in the world, with around 600 individuals living within the park's boundaries. Visitors can spot these giants grazing in the grasslands, bathing in the rivers, or even crossing the road during jeep safaris or jungle walks.
But there's more to the one-horned rhinoceros than its imposing appearance. These animals are also known for their fascinating behaviour, such as wallowing in mud to cool down and avoid insect bites, or charging at perceived threats to defend their territory or young ones.
If you're lucky enough to spot a one-horned rhinoceros in Chitwan National Park, you'll have an unforgettable experience that will leave you in awe of these magnificent creatures. And with careful conservation efforts in place, you can rest assured that your visit will also contribute to the protection of this endangered species for generations to come.
